The National Retail Association (NRA) has lauded the decision by the South Australian Government to again approve Boxing Day trade in Adelaide suburbs claiming it will lead to a sales bonanza.

NRA Manager of Industry Policy David Stout said that the announcement was a boon for retailers across suburban Adelaide and will again be embraced by shoppers.

“The NRA commends the South Australian Government on this announcement and we have no doubt it will repeat last year’s (2018) successful initiative and provide a Boxing Day sales bonanza to participating retailers,” Mr Stout said.

“Being allowed to open for trade on a holiday such as Boxing Day is essential in modern retail and reflects the overwhelming demand of Adelaide consumers.

“The announcement is based on the simple premise of giving businesses the opportunity to trade if they wish and providing shoppers with the choice of shopping at their local suburban outlet.

“Christmas is a critical time of year for all retailers and after a sluggish 2019 small businesses are desperate to obtain maximum sales this holiday season.”

The move also comes off the back of last week’s announcement by the State Government to bring Black Friday to South Australia for the first time ever on November 29 this year (2019).

“Black Friday is a phenomenon in the United States and we’re delighted that Adelaide retailers will be permitted to open their doors until midnight on November 29 (2019),” Mr Stout said.

“It will enable consumers to get a head start on their Christmas shopping, while also providing a giant cash injection to local retailers.”

The announcement by South Australian Treasurer Rob Lucas will allow suburban retailers to voluntarily trade between 9am and 5pm Boxing Day, while enabling CBD businesses to trade from 9am instead of 11am.
