Incident response vehicles and truck-mounted attenuators

Incident response vehicles
Source: R. Blackman

This project will provide guidance on best practice for the procurement and use of truck-mounted attenuators (TMA) and incident response vehicles. The guidance will collectively consider and prioritise best safety outcomes for stakeholders (incident responders and road users), consistency of practice across Austroads member agencies (acknowledging provision for jurisdictional autonomy where necessary), and efficiency in terms of financial investment.

Project background

Truck-mounted attenuators and incident response vehicles (IRVs) provide protection from vehicle intrusion into incident sites. They also ameliorate the impacts of errant vehicle crashes and help to provide traffic guidance to reduce crash risk and minimise incident-related traffic congestion, assisting in road network recovery.

As such, they are integral to the provision of safety for incident responders and road users alike and are used in all Australian jurisdictions. The project will provide Austroads with a research report and guidelines on TMA and IRV design, manufacture, procurement and use that are applicable and relevant to Austroads member agencies in Australia and New Zealand.

Project objectives

This research aims to provide guidance on best practice for the procurement and use of TMAs and incident response vehicles. Specifically, the purpose of the project is to produce a comprehensive research report and to develop and document best-practice guidance for:

  1. The design and procurement of incident response vehicles, and;
  2. The use of Truck-Mounted Attenuators in incident response

This guidance will collectively consider and prioritise best safety outcomes for stakeholders (incident responders and road users), consistency of practice across Austroads member agencies (acknowledging provision for jurisdictional autonomy where necessary), and efficiency in terms of financial investment.
